First Permanent Executive Director is Hamtramck Resident, Long-time Volunteer

HAMTRAMCK, MI – October 10, 2023 – The Hamtramck Parks Conservancy (HPC) announces Thomas Habitz, Jr. as its Executive Director, effective September 2023. Mr. Habitz is a recognized leader in planning and economic development in the Detroit area, having enjoyed a lengthy career with Henry Ford Health developing and executing strategy in that space. He is a proud long-time Hamtramck resident, and frequent volunteer with City boards and commissions, and with sports and recreation in the area.
“Our parks are the lifeblood of our community in many ways,” Habitz said. “They are places that bring us together, honor our heritage, and create new memories. It is a privilege to steward these indispensable assets, and it is an exciting time in Hamtramck as we chart our future course together.”
The HPC is responsible for implementation of the Hamtramck Recreation District plan, which proposes to transform the 26 acres of recreation and open space on the City’s southern end. Goals of the plan include new and improved recreation fields and equipment, enhancements to accessibility, and raising the profile of the historic venues. The organization is dedicated to operation of the parks in a way that maintains them as a quality amenity for residents, and also attracts visitors to our community. The parks play a crucial role as locations for exercise, play, and gathering, especially for youth and the diverse populations of the city.
Mr. Habitz holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, and a master’s degree in urban planning from Wayne State University. His honors include the Detroit Revitalization Fellowship and the Marshall Memorial Fellowship (of the German Marshall Fund of the U.S.).
